Needless to say ….SPOILERS ahead!
This could be the bloodiest episode of the entire series, and yet it did not involve any White Walkers!
The season 6 finale just ended for me a couple of moments ago, leaving my mind in a mixed state of emotions. I was depressed that I have to wait for another year for another season. I was shocked that so many characters, some very popular yet secondary ones, get killed tonight. I was happy that a certain fan theory is proven right, and that Jon Snow is given his right status. I am ecstatic that a white haired queen is riding to Westeros with an imp by her side and dragons above. I am also worried when a certain hateful Queen Mother gets to ascend the throne. And I am jubilant that a girl with a name gets to cut off a few names off her list!
This is definitely not the best finale, as it leaves a certain sense of incompleteness in the way certain things are handled! It’s like the makers were rushing in to close several stands as well as set for the next season. So before we could fathom what happened with one strand, we are suddenly moved into the next one!
Let’s get to the review of the longest episode of the season…
# As suspected Cersei and Qyburn found out about the Wildfire hidden below the city and use it to exact revenge on High Sparrow. They succeed in killing off High Sparrow, Margaery, Lancel Lannister, Loras Tyrell, and lot of citizens. Margaery’s’ death is to most mourned, since she was one great character and we never get to know what her end play was (will miss you Natalie Dormer)
# Qyburn also get Maester Pycelle brutally killed using the little birds of Varys, reminding us of kid-horror films like Children of the Corn. Cersei also gets the nun who tortured her, and gets Clegane to finish her off! Yup, and we finally get to see his face unmasked!
# King Tommen, unable to bear the loss of his wife, commits suicide. However, a power-hungry Cersei has little remorse over his death.
# Walder Frey holds a party in Jaime’s honour to celebrate their victory over Blackfish. Jaime notices a certain girl eyeing him for a long time there.
# Later when everyone leaves the party, the same girl serves Walder a pie which happens to be made of his sons’ carcasses. The girl is later revealed to be Arya Stark, who seems to have stolen a mask, and she kills Walder taking revenge for the Red Wedding.
# Daenerys is ready to sail to Westeros and she gets rid off Daario by asking him to stay behind and take care of Meereen, despite his reluctance to leave her. Daario realises she is acting as per Tyrion’s advice.
# Tyrion later tries to console her, but she admits she really doesn’t feel bad, though she should. She also makes Tyrion the Hand of The Queen.
# Varys helps in arranging for a truce between a bereaved Olenna Tyrell and a vengeful Ellaria Sand to take down Cersei.
# At Winterfell, Davos Seaworth confronts Melisandre in front of Jon Snow and makes her admit to her crime of getting Shireen Baratheon burned. Jon Snow gets her exiled, with a warning that if she ever returns, she will be executed. Is this the end of Melisandre? We hope not!
# Baelish reveals his real game plan to Sansa – he wants to ascend the Iron Throne and he wants Sansa to be by his side. Sansa, though wary, brushes him off!
# Later, through a very provocative speech by Lady Mormont (I am becoming a fan of hers by the day), the rest of the lords proclaim Jon Snow the King of the North.
# Benjen Stark leaves Bran and Meera near the wall, where Bran goes into the Tower of Joy vision again. He finds Ned stark meeting his dying sister at the tower, who whispers something into her brother’s ears before handing him a baby.Which, of course, is Jon Snow.
# Jaime returns to King’s Landing with Bronn only to find the city in smoke, and Cersei being anointed as the Queen. And he doesn’t look very happy about what’s happening!
# Sam also makes an appearance as he and Gilly reaches the Citadel, where he is inducted to be trained as the Maester.
# The final shot has Daenerys finally setting sail to Westeros with Tyrion, Yara, Theon, Missandei, Grey Worm, the Dothraki and Varys (who like Baelish can transport himself anywhere it seems!)
So what did you feel about the season finale?
