The movie was a decent attempt at best
Nani is one actor who is currently having an excellent time in Tollywood. He impressed us all in his previous comic flick Krishnagaadi Veera Prema Gatha. Now he has opted for a romantic thriller Gentleman, and if you watch the film to the end, you will find that the film lives up to its title. Check out what the film is about…
What’s it about
Gentleman is a story of two girls, Catherine, played by Nivetha Thomas and Aishwarya played by Surabhi. It is also a story of their turbulent journey with their respective boyfriends in a way. Catherine and Aishwarya meet in an airplane where the two get chatty about their love life. Catherine has a boyfriend named Gautham, played by Nani, who is all youthful and naughty. He follows Catherine around until she falls for him. Cathy has a relative named David who is a criminal and drug dealer. One day David manhandles Cathy and Gautham swoops in and beats him. On the other hand Aishwarya has a very romantic tale. She meets Jayaram, which is also played by Nani, who is a wealthy business tycoon. The two go on a sudden trip to Kodaikanal, leaving all their money and identity behind. The two have a really adventurous road trip at the end of which they fall for each other. So as the two girls touchdown, Aishwarya is greeted by her fiance Jai, who looks exactly like Cathy’s boyfriend Gautham. A shocked Catherine goes to Gautham’s place to find that he has actually passed away in an accident.
As she is grieving her loss, one day a reporter called Nithya comes to meet her and tell her that Gautham was mostly killed by Jai, Aishwarya’s fiance. Catherine swears vengeance and she goes about trying to make Jai confess that he indeed killed Gautham. She joins Jai’s company as an employee and goes about following him until she discovers that nothing is as straightforward as she thought. What she discovers about Jai and what really happened to Gautham makes up for the rest of the tale.
What’s hot
Nani is the star of the film, in every sense of the word. He proves his amazing versatility as an actor as he plays dual roles of Gautham and Jai very convincingly. It was not easy to pull it off as both the characters were really different in nature. But it all comes naturally to Nani. Nivetha Thomas was also pretty good as Catherine. In fact, in some scenes she almost outdid Nani himself and that is a very big deal considering that this is Nivetha’s first Telugu film. The story was also pretty interesting, and the thriller elements were well highlighted. Best part was that the romance and comedy segments which make up for more than half of the film, was not too dull or boring, even though it was completely predictable. Overall, a descent attempt to make a different content based film with a lot of commercial elements.
What’s not
The screenplay is one thing which pulls down Gentleman. It is slow and lethargic at times and in some places, hinders with the continuity of the plot. The real story begins from the second half, where the movie changes from a light romantic film to a sinister thriller. But that’s the problem, the movie takes way too long to reach the interesting part and by that time, the twist becomes pretty obvious. So in a way, the thrill factor was not executed properly by director Mohan Krishna Indraganti. Also, the climax was pretty anticlimactic and a let down, personally. In the end, Gentleman is good in all the superficial aspects, but falls a bit behind when it actually comes to the core story.
What to do
Gentleman is a decent attempt at a romantic thriller, which basically gets the romance part right but screws up the thriller part with some obvious twists. Watch the film for mainly for riveting performances by Nani and Nivetha Thomas.
