Jason Roy was happy to see his hard work pay off after hitting a match-winning 162 to lead England to a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the one-day international series.
The Surrey opener fell just five runs short of the England ODI record held by Robin Smith as England comfortably chased down a target of 308 at The Oval.
Roy told Sky Sports 2: ‘What a day, an incredible win for the boys and I’m stoked.

‘I’ve put in a lot of hard work and it’s nice to see it pay off and contribute in a winning way was special and something I’m never going to forget, but at the end I was pretty disappointed to be honest.’
When questioned on missing out on the record for England’s highest ever individual score, he said: ‘I’ll take second but it was pretty cool for me.
‘I think both hundreds were quite special, both were different. The first one, we were under control but this time we were under the punt a bit having to make seven an over. Credit to the way they batted as well but it was our night.’

England captain Eoin Morgan hailed the performance of Roy and said: ‘Jason Roy seems to ever impress, he’s certainly making the most of his form at the moment and that’s a huge thing in international cricket. You get on a huge run and you cash in and to cash in like he did today, it was certainly a match-winning innings for us.
‘I don’t think there was much margin for error on what was a fantastic wicket. Credit has to go to the ground staff here. We’ve had some really troubling weather over the past couple of days, on a superb batting wicket like that you have to say well done to them.
‘I still don’t think we helped ourselves, we didn’t hit our lengths early enough and then when you try to defend both sides of the wicket it makes it difficult. In patches we sort of showed what we did in Bristol and Trent Bridge but certainly we’re looking to improve on that in Cardiff.’

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews stretches for the ball during his unbeaten innings of 67
Dejected Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews felt their bowlers did not get the wickets needed in order to restrict England’s run chase.
‘I thought we had a good score on the board but it’s unfortunate we didn’t bowl well,’ he admitted. ‘Our bowlers were pretty ordinary but it was an outstanding effort by Jason, he batted brilliantly. Jason took the game away from us.
‘We had to put in a good effort, especially with the batting but today was today and for us the bowling didn’t work. Roy took us on from the word go and he was taking brilliant, calculated risks.
‘We’ve got so many casualties at the moment, we’ve got four or five in the team, we had to play through those but it’s time to make a couple of changes.’
